HISTORY OF UDAIPUR
Udaipur is known as the Venice of the east. Udaipur, once known as Mewar, is the land that produced a galaxy of patriots and heroes in quick succession, people who etched the name of Rajasthan in every corner of the world. Its history has been a continuous struggle for freedom of religion, thought and land against other Rajput groups as well as the overbearing Mughals and Muslims of bygone eras. Its act of patriotism, heroism, magnanimous behavior and love for independence can never find any match in the annals of any country. Udaipur was founded by Rana Udai Singh after the fall of Chittor to Akbar in 1568. It is also called the city of lakes. The Lake Palace on Jag Niwas Island in the middle of Pichola Lakes is the finest example of its architectural and cultural explosion. Udaipur is also the centre for performing arts, craft and its famed miniature paintings.The Shilp Gram festival is a center of attraction during the season.
MONUMENTS TO VISIT
City Palace- City Palace towers over the Pichola Lake. Maharana Uday Singh initiated in the construction of the palace but succeeding Maharanas added several palaces and structures to the complex retained a surprising uniformity to the design. The entry to the Palace is from the Hati Pol, the Elephant gate. The Bari Pol or the Big gate brings you to the Tripolia, the Triple gate. It was once a custom that the Maharana would weigh under this gate in gold and silver, which was distributed to the populace. Balconies, cupolas and towers surmount the palace to give a wonderful view of the lake. The Palace is flanked by octagonal corner towers surmounted by cupolas and thus is a fine blend of Rajput and Mughal styles of architecture.
Fateh Prakash Palace- The Fateh Prakash Palace is one ancient haveli that is worth visiting. Though this palace has now been converted into a heritage hotel. The walls of this ancient haveli are adorned with paintings that belong to the Mewar school of Painting that was at its peak during the 17th century.
Jag Mandir- Jag mandir in Udaipur was built by Maharana Karan Singh to provide refuge to Prince Khurram who is generally famous as Emperor Shah Jahan. Prince Khurram was the isolated son of Emperor Jahangir. There was a bitter enmity between Emperor Jahangir and Maharana Karan Singh of Udaipur. Maharana Karan Singh helped Shah Jahan in his difficult times also because he was the son of a Rajput mother. The island of Jag mandir is surrounded by a row of elephants. You can also find minutely carved chattri made up of gray and blue stones. The royal palace known as Jag mandir is made up of red sandstone. It was once studded with precious and semi precious stones like jasper, jade and rubies. You can have a relax walk on the spacious courtyards, spotless white marble dome, high roofed rooms, arched pavilions and a lashing green garden which is densely populated with trees and flowering creepers. In this gigantic palace there is also a temple called Jagdish temple and it is said that the name of jag mandir was derived from it.
Crystal Gallery- It is situated in the Fateh Prakash Palace is a breath taking collection of crystals. Maharana Sajjan Singh mainly ordered these crystals from F & C Osler England. But he could not see the crystals because of his untimely death. The crystal item includes tables, sofa sets, dinning table, dressers, fountains and even beds besides a whole array of washing bowls, decanters and perfume bottles.
Lake Palace- The Lake Palace is located on the Jag Niwas Island and covers the whole of 1.5 hectare of the island in the middle of the Pichola Lake. Built by Maharana Jagat Singh in 1743 it was meant as a royal summer palace and now converted in to a five star palace hotel. It is a magical palace and its image in the middle of the lake is like a leaf straight out of a fairy tale book with an excellent taste of intricate craftsmanship and the ethnic themes using the textiles and handicrafts all over highlight the beauty that is simply beyond compare the lake around makes a pleasant murmur with its rippling waves and lapping that adds to the mesmerising moments.
